Make Your Own Nintendo Virtual Boy Headset With An Android Smartphone & Google Cardboard

Google-Cardboard-Virtual-Boy-HeadsetLet's face it, the Virtual Boy isn't exactly the cheapest bit of retro gaming kit, but it's without a doubt one that just about everyone wants to experience. If you're on a strict budget, you'll be pleased to know there's now a way to emulate Nintendo's portable VR console from 1995 with a do-it-yourself virtual reality headset - all for under £20.

With the recent advancements in the likes of the Oculus Rift and other VR technologies, developers have also been working on cheaper alternatives for all to enjoy. One of the more easily accessible headsets around is known as Google Cardboard. This buildable box with two standard curved lens recreates the virtual reality experience by allowing you to slot in a mobile phone. With the device in place, the on-screen visuals from your phone are split into two sections and thus create the illusion of 3D when looking through the box.

Although simplistic in design, Google Cardboard works surprisingly well - especially for retro gamers. With Nintendo still yet to bring the Virtual Boy to the 3DS handheld, gamers have instead found a way to emulate the early VR system through Google Cardboard. By streaming the on-screen visuals of your PC emulating the Virtual Boy to your Android phone, you're actually able to display both the left and right outputs of Nintendo's portable into Google Cardboard, all as if you had your very own system.
