Footage of Lost PC Engine Ports of Marble Madness, Popils and More Released by Tengen Staffer

A former Tengen staff member, Jun Amanai, has recently been uploading footage of PC Engine ports of games like Peter Pack Rat and Marble Madness which otherwise have never seen the light of day, until now.

Actual footage of unreleased games is always good to see, but these clips- of Marble Madness, Off the Wall, Peter Pack Rat and Popils on both the Famicom and PC Engine- are particularly interesting for a few reasons. For a start, Off the Wall and Peter Pack Rat were Atari arcade games that received no home console ports (Peter Pack Rat made it to the Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC but that's it), and while no comment is given for Peter Pack Rat, Off the Wall was cancelled because it would need an 8MB cart and a paddle controller.

Popils, on the other hand, is a strange one- the video description says the PC Engine port was made to explore the hardware so may not have been intended for release, but the Famicom one apparently was, and this would've been the only home console version of the game as it only made it to the Game Gear. A single-screen puzzle game, Popils is probably best known for being designed by the late Fkuio Mitsuji, the creator of Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands.

Jun Amanai's page on MobyGame shows the other games he worked on that actually got released, but probably his most interesting work, as a project leader, was TAMA: Adventurous Ball in Giddy Labyrinth, a Marble Madness-inspired launch title for both the Playstation and Saturn in 1994 which has an interesting history covered by the excellent and exhaustive Playstation: Year One video series by the Adventure Pals (Amanai and his ties to TAMA and Marble Madness at the 5:07 mark).

History lesson aside, it's good to see games like these, that would've never been seen by anyone otherwise, are getting found and documented. We've included the Peter Pack Rat and Popils FC footage above, but be sure to look at Jun Amanai's YouTube channel, linked below, for the other games.

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!

Nice. I'd love to check out Marble Madness and Peter Pack Rat. Loved both of those back in the day in the arcade's.
