Loriciel's Unreleased 'Buck Rogers' Super Nintendo Prototype Found

Buck-Rogers-SNES-Prototype2014 has been an incredible year for video preservationists. We've seen countless unreleased titles and unfinished releases surfacing online, many of which being stand out games we were all waiting for back in the day. A more unusual one, however, has just made its way into gamer's hands, Buck Rogers for the Super Nintendo.

Originally developed by French studio Loriciel in 1993, this title was due to be released sporting Buck Rogers branding and visuals. For whatever reason the licensing agreement for the use of the Buck Rogers name must have been revoked, leaving the game in limbo, That said, those thinking this prototype looks somewhat familiar aren't mistaken.

Assuming Loriciel didn't want their work to go to waste, the French developers decided to strip out any references to Buck Rogers and instead replace them with their existing character, Jim Power. This is turn ended up being an official Super Nintendo release as a North American exclusive, also arriving on the PC too.

Those wanting to check out the differences between both the original Jim Power and this Buck Rogers alternative will be pleased to know that a ROM files is now floating around online in the usual places.

Really interesting stuff, here. I am a huge fan of Jim Power on SNES, so it's interesting to see that it originally was a Buck Rogers game.
