Long Lost ‘Tom & Jerry: The Chase Is On’ Super Nintendo Prototype Discovered

Tom-and-Jerry-The-Chase-Is-On-Super-Nintendo-PrototypeNothing quite beats the mystery of a video game that goes missing during its development. From the likes of Starfox 2 to Sonic Xtreme, the arrival of unreleased titles surfacing years later provides retro gamers with even more to enjoy on their favourite consoles. The latest title from the archives to surface is a Tom & Jerry game for the Super Nintendo - one that’s completely different to the cat and mouse’s 16-bit debut.

Due to be released by Hi Tech Expressions as follow-up to the Tom & Jerry game from 1993, Tom & Jerry: The Chase Is On was a more ambitious effort to capture the essence of the cartoon in game form. Drawing inspiration from the high-speed chases through neverending corridors and rooms, this unreleased Super Nintendo title sees you take control of Jerry as you attempt to outrun the oversized Tom sprite. Also allowing you to tactically jump over the cat and throw him around, Tom & Jerry: The Chase Is On appears to hold quite a lot of promise despite development going unfinished.

Although the ROM of Tom & Jerry: The Chase Is On is yet to be released online, there is hope for fans of the obscure and unfinished titles out there. The current owner of this Super Nintendo prototype is the same collector who uncovered the recently released Sound Factory - something which has since been released online to the retro gaming community.

Always great to see more prototype games coming into the spotlight. Although this looks like it might have been somewhat of a repetitive game and perhaps that's why it got canned? Still be nice to give it a whirl should it get released in rom format.
