Long Lost Commodore 64 Platformer 'Daffy Duck And The Great Paint Caper' Recovered & Released

Daffy-Duck-Commodore-64-Unreleased-GameOnce again the retro gaming world has been gifted another previously thought to be lost adventure through the continued efforts of enthusiastic retro gamers. Archival group and video game historians Games That Weren't recently managed to track down the team behind the missing Commodore 64 release Daffy Duck And The Great Paint Caper. After several discussions and archival efforts, the unreleased title's source code was located and recompiled into a playable form that had only been seen by a select few all those years ago.

For those not too familiar with this missing Looney Tunes hit, Commodore 64 magazine Zzap 64 gave the game a glowing review and rating of 94% in August 1992 - only to then see the game completely fly off the radar. For many, the impressive review score and stunning screenshots left a large void in many Commodore 64 collections, with archivists Games That Weren't finding themselves on a two decade long hunt for any leads on the game's whereabouts.

After what was seeming thought to be nothing more than a dead end, the game development duo Ashley Routledge and Dave Saunders still happened to hold backups of their unfinished code containing Daffy Duck And The Great Paint Caper. WIth several nights spent plowing through a long lost language and working with archaic development software, Games That Weren't have finally brought this Looney Tunes title back to life.

The game itself appears to be very similar to Hi-Tec's other licensed platformers, a side-scrolling adventure with the whole cartoon cast knocking around. Does it still stand up to its 94% review score though? Well its visuals sure are impressive by Commodore 64 standards, the game has the SID chip roaring, and the platforming action is pretty good. So should you be either a fan of Daffy Duck, the Commodore 64, or even unreleased video games, be sure to take a minute out to experience the rewards of a two decade long hunt.
