KyroFlux, a USB Floppy Disk reader in development

kryofluxWhile the title may be a bit misleading, the KyroFlux is very much a welcome in the Retro Gaming preservation scene. At first glance you may wonder why a Floppy Disk drive should be anything to be excited about, but the Kyroflux will be able to read multiple floppy disk formats.

Once this device is finished, backing up Commodore Amiga, Atari St and many more Floppy Disk games will become alot easier.

The KyroFlux is currently in development by the Software Preservation Society. Its features are best read directly from the team itself:

"KryoFlux is an advanced software-programmable FDC (Floppy Disk Controller) system we created that runs on small and cheap ARM7-based devices and connects to a host PC over the ubiquitous USB connector. It reads (and in the future, will write) flux transitions from magnetic media (most commonly, floppy disks) at a very fine resolution. KryoFlux can read data with no regard for what disk format or copy protection a disk may contain, and it can also read disks originally written with different (and even varying) bit cell widths and drive speeds, with a normal fixed-speed drive.

KryoFlux was written primarily with preservation of floppy disk data in mind, and so a large amount of effort was expended to create a reliable system that integrates comprehensive error detection mechanisms. This will not guarantee that the data on a disk is correct or authentic, that requires analysation, but it will indicate problems when reading disks and when transferring that data to the host PC.

KryoFlux is intended to replace, in the long term, our previous Amiga-based solution CT."
