Kojima’s Visual Novel Masterpiece ‘Policenauts’ Gets Sega Saturn Fan Translation Patch

Policenauts-Sega-Saturn-English-TranslationWhile Kojima will always be remembered for his work on the Metal Gear series, his other releases over the years deserve just as much of the limelight. Both Snatcher and Policenauts have become cult classics in recent years - and rightly so, however, only Snatcher managed to make the cut where official localisation was concerned. As of today though, both the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Policenauts are fully playable in English from start to finish thanks to fan translation projects.

For those unfamiliar with the game, it’s very different to Kojima’s other productions and is effectively an interactive storybook. Without any quickfire action sequences the majority of your time will be spent reading through pages upon pages of dialogue in what can only be described as one of the greatest gaming stories ever told. After surviving a deep space accident which sees our protagonist Jonathan Ingram drifting into the vast unknown, the former Policenauts returns to the space colony Beyond Coast to some worrying times. Working as a private investigator, Ingram tasks himself with getting to the bottom of his former wife’s husband's disappearance. As you’d expect from Kojima, this is only the beginning of our galactic text-based adventure.

Originally starting work in 2012, JunkerHQ Forum member FacundoARG set out to translate the Saturn port of the game following his frustrations with the PlayStation version. As FacundoARG and many others will tell you, the three console ports of the game all come with various hang-ups - this sees the PlayStation port playing videoclips back at a lowly 15fps, the Panasonic 3DO opting to use horrific video compression, and the Saturn suffering from slightly degraded video. Nevertheless the Sega port of the game was not only the last release of the bunch, but also the most definitive. Introducing additional scenes, modified story elements, and even light gun support for the shooting sections, many consider the Saturn version to be the one to play today.

Nearly four years after the initial announcement, a downloadable English patch which completely localises the game into English is now available. With legally obtained Sega Saturn ISOs of the three discs Policenauts spans to hand, you’ll be able to apply this patch to each disc using the ROM patching software XDelta. Full instructions can be found within the download.
