Japanese RetroN 5 Killer ‘Retro Freak’ Due For Game Gear, Sega Mark III & SG-1000 Compatible Add-On

Retro-Freak-Game-Gear-and-Master-System-Adapter-Coming-SoonIf you haven’t already seen, there’s a new alternative to the RetroN 5 which is making waves in the retro gaming world: the Retro Freak. Cyber Gadget’s recently released system not only matches what Hyperkin’s all-in-one console does, but it also offers support for additional systems like the PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 - with compatibility with the Sega Game Gear, Sega Mark III and SG-1000 arriving early next year.

Having recently received this Japanese made unit, we’ll be giving our official thoughts on the Retro Freak in the coming weeks. At an early glance though it’s safe to say that this system sure packs a punch and is a fantastic addition to any retro gamer’s collection. If anything too, it almost feels as if the days of importing games are back, especially as the latest add-on for the console is one the RetroN 5 could only hope to offer, and one exclusive to Japan.

Dubbed the Retro Freak Gear Converter, fans of Sega’s early hardware will be pleased to know their 8-bit collections are covered with this adapter which plugs into the console’s Mega Drive cartridge slot. As mentioned, the Sega Game Gear, Sega Mark III (Japanese Master System) and SG-1000 will become compatible with the Retro Freak, allowing you to back-up and play all your favourites from this era.

It’s worth mentioning, however, that the Master System behaves a little differently to the Mark III. While it’s yet to be confirmed if European and American games will work with the device, our hopes are high that a Master System to Mark III convertor will address any issues. More on that when we know.

The Retro Freak Gear Converter is due for release in February 2016, although no price has been given for this add-on as of yet.

It's not very clear on their site - Does the device play 32X games?
