Japanese Exclusive Promotional Sega Dreamcast Adventure 'What's Shenmue?' Fan Translated Into English, Spanish & German

Whats-Shenmue-English-Fan-Translation-PatchBelieve it or not but the Sega Dreamcast made its punchy debut in North America fifteen years ago today. To help celebrate this monumental slice of retro gaming history, the prolific Shenmue fan site Shenmue Dojo have prepared a little something for fans of the 128-bit console. As of now the Japanese exclusive promotional demo of Shenmue known as What's Shenmue? has been fan translated into English, Spanish and German.

If you're unfamiliar with What's Shenmue despite being a fan of the series, you're in for a treat. Gamers in Japan that pre-ordered the game unfortunately saw a timely delay before the game finally arrived. To help remedy this delay, Sega provided those awaiting their copy of the game with a promotional demo disc of the game known as What's Shenmue?.

Instead of just featuring a slice of the action that was due to appear in the finished product, What's Shenmue brought along a short exclusive tongue-in-cheek adventure celebrating the Sega Dreamcast's upcoming release. Within the game Ryo finds himself chasing after Sega's ex-Senior Managing Director Hidekazu Yukawa around Dobuita. Upon catching up to the Director in the You Arcade, Ryo battles off an attacker. After a short exchange of words, Yukawa awakens from a dream to find himself in Sega's HQ, in front of a Shenmue poster and plenty of consoles needing to be sold.

While What's Shenmue may have remained a Japanese exclusive, fan translation efforts have finally brought this long-awaited snippet of Shenmue history to Western shores.

As usual, to enjoy this fan translation patch you will need to have an original What's Shenmue? Sega Dreamcast ISO to which you can apply this patch to. Full instructions on how to patch this ROM can be found within the download, or you can refer to this handy ROM patching guide on YouTube.
