Japan-Exclusive Sega Mega Drive RPG "Rent-a-Hero" Fan-Translated

Fans of Sega RPGs beyond Phantasy Star (and anyone out there who's unlocked all the characters in Fighters Megamix) should be delighted to know that after the longest time, the weird Mega Drive RPG developed by the legendary AM2, Rent-a-Hero, has finally been fan-translated.

Released in 1991 only in Japan, Rent-a-Hero sees the protagonist, Taro Yamada, accidentally order a power Combat Armour suit while trying to order a pizza for a house-warming party. The suit increases his strength immensely... But he also has to pay for it, leading to him becoming a hero for hire- a Rent-a-Hero, if you will- to pay off what he owes and see to the crime infesting his city. From the premise alone, you can tell this takes a slightly more comic tone than other RPGs! Rent-a-Hero would later appear as an unlockable character in Fighters Megamix on the Saturn, and get a remakein the form of Rent-a-Hero No. 1 for the Dreamcast and Xbox (with the Xbox version getting so close to an English release, there's a translated version floating around) but until now, his Mega Drive game has never been translated.

With a translation by Paul Jensen, hacking by RedComeyt and script editing by NikoDC, English players can now finally try Rent-a-Hero for themselves, which is a good thing as the first attempt to do so was done all the way back in 1998! As ever with these fan translations, you'll need an original Rent-a-Hero Mega Drive ROM file to apply the patch to, with instructions on how to do so in the patch's readme file, or just follow this ROM patching video guide.

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!

I got so much love for the groups translating these games for everyone to enjoy. Just try to imagine how much dedication goes into something like this and it's absolutely incredible. Very soon i'm going to write an open love letter to translation groups and i really hope they will read it because it's going to get deep, and a little strange... But really everyone should check this game out, i have been playing it and it's not something we here in the US are used to playing.
