Hyperkin Reveal Upcoming ‘Smart Boy’ Game Boy Adapter For Mobile Phones

Hyperkin-Smart-Boy-At-E3As part of an April Fools hoax last year, Hyperkin taunted retro gamers with a mockup of hardware that would allow the use of Game Boy cartridges on smartphones. Although anything but their intention, Hyperkin were left wondering how to deal with the flood of genuine interest in such a device. As a result the Smart Boy was quickly pushed into production to satisfy the unfooled gamers wanting more, with the first units in action demoed at this year’s E3.

While the original design featured an iPhone making use of the Smart Boy adapter, Hyperkin have since moved their focus over to Android based devices - presumably due to the lock down Apple have over the App Store. Knowing this it’s safe to assume that this cartridge slot enabled add-on, with physical controls at the ready, is set to work out the box with the various emulators that sit proudly on Google Play.

At this point in time we’re yet to know the hardware’s release date or price, however, seeing the unit running Pokemon Yellow from an original cartridge has plenty of us anticipating further news.

This looks like a viable addon if the controller has good buttons. If only I had an Android phone. :)

Surely this must be a typo? It's just an emulation controller isn't it?

When I saw the April fools I really thought it was a waste of money for something like this. But; after playing alot more GB games on my phone lately I'll definitely be interested in one. Wonder if the controller functions will work with other emulators such as the nes. At a guess at the moment I'm guessing it will be basically two plastic buttons with touch screen conductive pads below? Wonder if it will work on only certain emulators where the keys match up below correctly.
