Homebrew Port Of 'F-Zero' Unofficially Speeds On To Mega Drive

F-Zero-Ported-To-Mega-Drive-in-G-ZeroIt’s amazing what homebrew developers can now do. Not only have we seen all new titles hitting our favourite consoles from decades ago, but also exclusive titles venturing their way onto different platforms. Of the latter, the fast paced Super Nintendo racer F-Zero has somehow made its way onto the Mega Drive.

Now joining the unofficial PC Engine port of F-Zero is the aptly dubbed G-Zero - further proving how much untapped power there really is in Sega’s 16-bit hardware. With no Mode 7 functionality built into the Mega Drive, the faux 3D effect of scaling and rotating background layers commonly found on the Super Nintendo was very hard to pull off. Having said that, we've also seen a Star Fox tech demo on the Mega Drive, which if anything has made things look all too easy.

Also sporting a YM2612 remix of the Mute CIty theme tune, this tech demo is one you can actually sample yourself through a free ROM download. While it certainly has a way to go before the Super Nintendo original becomes under threat, it’s still an incredibly impressive demonstration and labour of love.

This is cool! Doesn't look too bad, either - colorful and fits the spirit of the original. I'd love to see a full game and cart release.

That is beyond excellent! Just the music alone brings tears to my eyes. If this ever grows into a full port and is put on cart I will buy it day one (if it's not instantly sold out!).

Great stuff.
