HDMI Out Modification ‘GCVideo’ Hits The Nintendo Gamecube

GCVideo-Gamecube-HDMI-Out-ModificationWhat will those talent retro gaming enthusiasts come up with next? Believe it or not but the Nintendo Gamecube has just been gifted compatibility with the most modern of monitors and TVs around following the arrival of a HDMI-Out modification. Simply dubbed GCVideo, this aftermarket enhancement is already offering impressive 240p, 480i and 480p output modes.

This all new development comes directly from the GC-Forever Forum where one retro gamer had managed to create a clone of the expensive and elusive component cable for the Gamecube. Sharing his results online through Github, the discussion soon evolved into methods of creating a HDMI out port for the console, which in due time had several individuals working on a solution.

After lengthy discussions the messageboard collectively sourced a suitable FPGA board to work with their findings and thus a HDMI out modification for the Gamecube was born. Sitting proudly in the console as a replacement for the digital out port, this new bit of kit not only provides a simple analogue to digital conversion, but also a built in menu to customise your video settings. By pressing and holding the L, R, Y and X when the console is on, you’ll be able to access a secret menu that allows you to change the output mode, add scanlines, and tinker with other adjustments to the video too.

As it stands though, those of you eager to obtain a HDMI Nintendo Gamecube need to either source, program and fit the FPGA board, or instead look for someone willing to do the service for you. RetroCollect member BuckoA51 is currently offering the service via his website VideoGamePerfection, but take note the parts and labour involved total to a cost similar to that of the Nintendo Gamecube component cable - £167.

Costs aside, the end result is impressive and without a doubt another step forward to ensuring our classic hardware keeps up to speed with modern displays.
