Hardcore - Unreleased Sega Megadrive game shown at Datastorm 2010

HardcoreMegadriveIn 1994, Psygnosis cancelled all the remaining unreleased Sega Megadrive games, dooming them to the vaults of unreleased code. One game in particular, Hardcore (in development by Digital Illusions) however was not going to lie down quietly. 16 years later, the coders have finally stepped forward.

This year's Datastorm, hosted in Sweden featured Digital Illusions co-founders Andreas Axelsson and Olof Gustafsson wanting to reveal their unreleased Megadrive game. Hardcore was 99% completed prior to it frustrating cancellation, with this video showing such promise as to what could have been.

The Digital Illusions duo have kindly stated they are willing to release the game to the public, however the rights remain with Sony (the latest owners of Psygnosis).

The rumour has it that Psygnosis cancelled 14 unreleased Megadrive games within one afternoon. One can only guess that another one of those 14 was also Bill's Tomato Game, a port being worked on at the time.

We shall be looking forward to more of the remaining games surfacing.
