Happy 30th Birthday To The Nintendo Famicom

Nintendo-Famicom-30th-BirthdayIt's been a year full of landmark birthdays, but one which will stand out for most gamers is today's milestone. Get ready to celebrate in style, as thirty years ago today, Nintendo unleashed the Famicom and never looked back. As they say, the rest is history, but join us today as we plug-in our beloved consoles and wish the 8-bit system a happy birthday.

While many will say that the NES didn't have much of an impact on European gamers, the legacy and lasting effect it has had on our gaming world is somewhat unmeasurable. With timeless classics such as The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros paving way for countless titles, where would we be without Nintendo's creation all those years ago?

The Famicom spawned so many greats and was host to many memorable series such as Castlevania, Mega Man, Metroid, Metal Gear, and even more obscure classics such as Mr Gimmick. Even its accessories such as the Power Glove and the Robotic Operating Buddy have since become iconic creations, as has the invaluable invention of the D-Pad.

But enough admiration from ourselves. Let's hear your own memories of the Nintendo NES / Famicom, its 8-bit epics, and of course, what titles you'll be enjoying over the course of the week to celebrate the system's 30th anniversary.

Back when the NES was around I had a Master System, a school buddy of mine did however have a NES and once every few months for a week or so we would swap over our consoles and games so we could experience the other side as they say.

I remember the day i borrowed his NES with his new purchase...METROID, i was so excited about getting it to play that i worried for days he would change his mind this time so when he turned up with a big bundle of joy i was over the moon.....Unfortunately I had gotten so worked up about playing Metroid that I had in fact given myself the worst headache and so for the first evening of it sitting in my room all i could do was look up every so often with a cold cloth on my head to reduce my temperature to see it on my old computer desk taunting me.

When i did get to play it though it was a dream come true, i also remember loving popeye and of course being obsessed with Mario Bros, but metroid was like nothing i had ever played before, to say my homework quality took a huge dive was an understatement.

Over the course of about 3 years we swapped and swapped and thats how i was lucky enough to experience both the Master System and the NES even though i was very poor during my childhood, im sure many others did similar things, it just made so much sense. After a while he also got a Master System so i was able to play games i couldn't afford at the time as well, he's the reason i experienced such hidden gems as Cloud Master.

I know he wont be reading this as we drifted apart after school but im sending these thoughts and love out across the vastness of the internet........ Thanks so much Grant, you were a really great friend.

I registered just so I could say this, how about some SG-1000 love? SEGA's first console is 30 years today as well.
