Happy 25th Birthday To The Sega Mega Drive

Mega-Drive-25th-Birthday25 years ago today, Sega unleashed in Japan what would quickly become its most successful console to date - the Mega Drive. After arriving on the Japanese high-street back on October 29th 1988, the 16-bit console has not only sold around 40 million times, but also provided countless memories to gamers worldwide.

We'll never miss any chance to talk about the Mega Drive, so its 25th birthday seems like the perfect excuse! With just about everyone of us having experienced the lush visuals, timeless soundtracks and rapid action on offer, Sega will always hold a special place in our hearts for their 16-bit efforts.

Following the console's release all those years ago, Sega soon cemented itself in the video game world with the likes of Sonic The Hedgehog and Streets Of Rage blasting into gamer's homes. It wasn't long until third-party developers began making names for themselves, most notably Electronic Arts and their countless sports titles, as well as Treasure's iconic action releases.

While Sega may no longer be leading the gaming world nor making consoles, their hard-work from the late eighties onwards has provided a strong foundation for countless others to build upon. Who knows what the gaming world would be like without the Sega Mega Drive - we don't even want to imagine...

So join us today, boot up your Sega Mega Drive, and indulge in your 16-bit favourites! We'll be playing Gunstar Heroes, Rocket Knight Adventures and Ristar - what about you?
