Happy 25th Birthday Super Mario Bros.

Super-Mario-Bros-25th-AnniversaryNow doesn't that make you feel old? Exactly 25 years ago today, September 13th 1985, Super Mario Bros made it's debut on the Nintendo Famicom in Japan. Two and a half decades later, Mario has risen up to be the most recognised character in gaming history and one worth celebrating.

The birthday celebrations are already being prepared in Japan, as rumoured earlier this month, the Nintendo Wii will be recieving the Super Mario Collection Special Pack. A Wii port of the Super Nintendo classic Super Mario All-Stars, including an official Soundtrack and art book. It's safe to say Japan really does get all the good stuff.

No word yet on a PAL / US release of the collection, but I think it's safe to say that such a big birthday won't go a miss worldwide. In the meantime, we can all celebrate the plumber's big day by booting up the Nintendo NES and getting nostalgic once more.

Nintendo has also opened up a new website for Mario's birthday, which can be viewed here.

This whole "Part of the Family for 25 Years" campaign stinks of audience assumption, and I don't like it one bit. On a pedantic arsehole level, Mario first appeared in 1981, followed by actually being NAMED as Mario in 1983...

Next, having that campaign in the USA and Japan is fine enough, but in the with Ant & Dec and Jonathan Ross spouting the same message all over the UK, where hardly anyone had a NES, is a bit of a big fat white lie, methinks. I think I know maybe... two (?) people who had a NES as a youngster.

Sorry, it's an ad-campaign that irks me so much more than the rest of Nintendo's already-amazingly-annoying ad-campaign.

Yeah, I was mightily confused by the 25 too. That video starts with SUPER Mario Bros. too while we all know about Mario Bros. where he already had his name too.
