GoldenEye once held the title of 'definitive multiplayer shooter'. Over time it's aged badly showing one of the most questionable framerates ever, however that's about to change. ROM hack GoldenEye: X brings over the characters, weapons and stages into the more fluid shooter; Perfect Dark.
The 1997 release of GoldenEye 007 from Rare set many standards to come where multiplayer shooters were concerned. Although many methods such as the 4 player split screen action and deathmatches had been done before, it wasn't until Rare bundled every good thing going for shooters into one. GoldenEye often holds a very special place in gamers (who grew up in the 90s) hearts.
GoldenEye's spiritual successor was released in 2000, under the name Perfect Dark. Making the most of the newly released Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak, the multiplayer shooter was back looking better than ever. Once again, Perfect Dark is highly regarded amongst gamers, but never seemed to knock GoldenEye off it's podium despite showing a more modern approach to the genre.
Fast forward 2011 and a dedicated group of gamers are releasing their third patch for their hybrid ROM hack. Hoping to create the ultimate Nintendo 64 multiplayer shooter, GoldenEye: X is now available to download.
