GGTV: Convert your Sega Game Gear into a TV Ready Console

GGTV-Sega-Game-Gear-TV-Out-KitAlthough the Sega Game Gear is pretty much an enhanced portable Master System, it's lacklustre screen makes its all important exclusive titles a real chore to enjoy. As of now though, there is a purchasable kit available, which after a little bit of dismantling and soldering, can provide a stunning picture signal from the fabled handheld.

Given that a good bulk of the Game Gear library is already available on the Sega Master System, you might well be wondering what titles make this impressive DIY TV-Out kit worth investing in. To name but a few, the Master System's portable sibling saw exclusive releases such as Super Return of the Jedi, The Excellent Dizzy Collection, Tempo, Coca Cola Kid and several Sonic The Hedgehog titles which the console equivalent missed out on.

Games aside, we have to admit there is something enticing about modifying a retro system into doing something it's not meant to do.

The kit itself, simply dubbed the GGTV, slots inside the handheld just under the cartridge slot and requires 20 different points to be soldered up to other areas on the unit and its new output port. Although fiddly and potentially difficult, the hardcore Game Gear fans amongst us will no doubt already be choosing which of their spare units to modify.

Sadly though, at the time of writing it would appear that all of these GGTV kits have sold out. Nevertheless the creator of this advanced piece of kit has made his email address available on his product's page for those interested in enquiring when stock will next become available.

This is a very interesting kit and I wonder if it (or something like it) could be used to drive a much better screen fitted into the GG itself, rather than a TV.

The only other thing I need is a GG TV tuner that receives digital broadcasts :)
