GDEmu Creator Announces Sega Saturn SD Card ISO Loading Disc Drive Replacement 'Rhea'

Sega-Saturn-Rhea-Disc-Drive-ReplacementIf you've been keeping an eye on the retro gaming news as of recent, you'll have noticed a sudden surge in after-market devices which allow classic games to be loaded into memory from MicroSD cards and other removable media. One of the more notable additions as of late has been a SD card enabled device to replace the Dreamcast's disc drive. The creator behind this revolutionary hardware is back, and it would appear that the Sega Saturn is getting an identical device.

The newly dubbed Rhea - arriving from the one behind the GDEmu - is the newest bit of kit in development to load game discs into memory from removable media. Similar to the GDEmu, the Saturn's upcoming Rhea will serve as a complete replacement to the existing disc drive - meaning original game discs will no longer be needed to play your favourite Sega Saturn titles.

According to the GDEmu blog, Rhea will simply plug into your console using existing cable from within, however, some additional soldering will be needed to power the device. This last point shouldn't deter you from picking up Rhea once it becomes available, as the features it looks set to come with are phenomenal. Alongside the obvious loading of game ISOs, Rhea will also be able to automatically region patch games to that of your console's region. Furthermore, it has been suggested that another solder point will potentially be added to the device to allow the console to automatically change between 50 and 60hz video modes depending on the game of your choice.

Needless to say we're rather excited about this recent development. That said, keep your eyes peeled. There's also a similar device in the works known as the Sarooo which promises similar features to that of Rhea.
