Final Fantasy VII - High Definition Restoration Patch

FinalFantasyVIIHDACIf you're sitting there in hope that SquareEnix are going to announce a HD remake of Final Fantasy VII at E3, we have something rather interesting for you in the meantime. FF7 enthusiasts have quietly been working hard over the last few years to create their own HD remake patch.

If you're in the group that often says the Sony Playstation 1 version of Final Fantasy VII is better than the PC port, you might want to look away now. Taking inspiration from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the members of Qhimm messageboard have released various patches for the PC version to update it.

The free patches released update the models in game, bringing the classic blocky characters to Advent Children standards. The opening scene has also been replaced with the one featured in Advent Children. And various auditory and graphical changes have been added.

The patching process however doesn't seem to be as simple as we'd hope. After reading various guides online, each update (models, graphics, video & audio) are each within their own standalone patches. There are a few guides online to patching the game that might worth a read; here and here.

If you're feeling brave and have time to spare, have a good look through the Qhimm messageboards and see what other patches are available.
