Fan-Made Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave 100 Level ROM Hack Released

You may have cleared out the Cave of Monsters in Bubble Bobble back in 1986, but Bub and Bob now have a Lost Cave to tackle, filled with 100 levels from the home ports, courtesy of super-fans Bisboch and Aladar.

Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave is a set of patches for the arcade ROM of Bubble Bobble that replaces all 100 levels with levels from the various home ports and conversions of Taito's beloved co-op bubble-em-up. Many of these home ports, such as the NES, Master System and Game Boy versions, had unique levels not seen in other versions, but Bibosch and Aladar have transplanted the best of them into the arcade game... Which, because of the difference of physics between the home ports and arcade original, make the stages feel very different indeed. In particular, the Game Boy stages- which you could only see part of originally, due to the GB's tiny screen- feel totally different when you can see all of the play area at once!

As well as different levels, some of the point bonus items you only saw in the home ports have been included, as well as totally new ones and some from later games in the Bubble Bobble series, and while you still need to beat Super Bubble Bobble mode to get the true ending, the code has changed and been craftily hidden, as have codes you can enter on the high-score table... Fittingly, this new take on Bubble Bobble has been released on the anniversary of Fukio 'MTJ' Mitsuji's death, designer of Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands, amongst others.

To play this new adventure, you'll need a clean Bubble Bobble arcade ROM, MAME to run it, and an IPS patcher- download the Bubble Bobble: Lost Cave patch at the game's official website, and follow the instructions in the readme to start a fantastic journey in a new cave.

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!

Bubble Bobble is one of my all-time-favorite-game and i have always wanted a sequel to the original game that also is true to the original (same graphics and style etc.. not that Bubble Memories crap). So it cant get better than this! I just tested the first 10 levels in mame and it worked really well! Thank you for writing about this RC!
