Ed Boon Officially Announces MK9 DLC, Fans Question Price

klassiccostumesEd Boon, Director of the latest iteration of Mortal Kombat has officially announced that fans will be treated to downloadable content extremely soon. He's been talking for months about DLC, and while things have been hinted at, nothing official has been announced until this week.

Though the blurb was quick, it mentions that the seven costumes that were pre order exclusives (Sub Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, Mileena, Ermac, Kitana and Jade,) it also adds the three classic fatality codes for Scorpion, Sub Zero and Reptile will be bundled in as well. In addition to these releases, brand new character Skarlet was announced. Formally known as The Lady In Red, this female ninja character is based off of a macro error similar to Ermac. Never before released, she is the only character that will be brand new to the series in a non-bug related release.

ladyinredgameproThe people down at Netherrealm Studios are very serious about making this lovely lady more than just a palette swap. Hans Lo, producer of the latest Mortal Kombat game had quite a bit to say about the character.

“They won’t be copy and pasted from characters already in the game – they’re going to have their own unique fighting styles, moves, fatalities and x-rays – all the good stuff,” he says.

People on Twitter have been asking Boon about the price, to which he replies it is currently in negotiation. Here's hoping that the costumes, which are already on the disc, are free. This is, for the most part, the assumption based off of Boon's confirmations about there being free DLC in the game.

"The two we're adding] are Kenshi, who players will recognise from previous MK games, and more excitingly we’re adding Scarlet," said Lo. "Anyone who knows the history of Mortal Kombat will tell you that back in the days of the arcade – when they did just palette swap characters to come up with multiple fighters in the game – there was a glitch in one of the old arcade machines that caused the Jade/Katana/Milena female ninja to glitch and turn red."

It will be refreshing to see both a brand new character, as well as Kenshi, who is the only post-MK4 character listed as DLC. A trailer will be released for the Lady In Red (Better known to fans as Scarlet or Skarlet,) on Friday according to Boon. There has yet to be a confirmation on where in the world it will hit first, or on what system. Regardless, what do you think? Post comments and chat about how much you think the DLC should cost, and tell us how and what you'd be willing to purchase.

DLC like this should be free. If it was a full blown expansion pack that actually took some effort to make, then it's worth paying for.
