E3 2015 Round-Up: The Year Of Retro Revivals & Remakes

E3-2015-Show-Round-UpAlthough E3 may still have a day to go, the gaming exhibition has already pulled out all the stops and left plenty to look forward to. The more surprising aspect to this year’s show though, is that more has been promised to the retro fanatics amongst us than next-gen gamers.

As crazy as it might sound, the headlines leaving Los Angeles this time round include stand out titles such as Final Fantasy VII, Earthbound, Tomb Raider, and Shenmue - all of which making us wonder if we’ve been sent back in time. Several of these, as you’re about to find out have finally answered decade long desires for retro gamers and reasons to invest in modern hardware.

Shenmue 3

That’s right! Believe it or not but Yu Suzuki is back and has announced that the long awaited follow up to Shenmue 2 is here. The creator of the series recently took to Kickstarter to seek funding for Shenmue 3, with the two million dollar target being smashed in less than twenty four hours. Due for release on both PlayStation 4 and PC in late 2017, those tempted in resuming Ryo’s adventure need only pledge $29 to secure a digital copy.

Earthbound Beginnings

Fans of the Super Nintendo and RPGs will no doubt have experienced the colourful and quirky adventure Earthbound. While the first tile in the series which debuted on the Nintendo Famicom may have skipped out on a worldwide release, creator Shigesato Itoi took to the stage during the Nintendo World Championships 2015 to announce some good news. Owners of the Nintendo Wii U would finally be able to experience Earthbound Beginnings (or Mother as it is known in Japan) through the Virtual Console.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

For years it has been rumoured, suggested, and hinted at that SquareEnix’s timeless Final Fantasy VII is due the remake treatment. From teaser trailers to outright denials, the seventh title in the series has been thrown around quite a bit over the last decade with gamers worldwide wondering why SquareEnix wasn’t interested in releasing a ‘money-printing’ title. Needless to say the long anticipated news finally arrived during E3 2015 - the Final Fantasy VII Remake is in development.

As said, there’s still time to go with E3 and plenty to be announced. Until then, keep reminding yourself that this is actually 2015 and these sequels and remakes are actually happening!
