Dragon's Crown, Vanillaware's scrolling brawler RPG, announced at E3

Among all the announcements at E3, here's one you might've missed, from Ignition Entertainment- Vanillaware, of Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire fame, are bringing the scrolling brawler back with RPG elements in the form of  Dragon's Crown, exclusively for PS3 and PS Vita.

Just a quick glance at the trailer below will remind retro gamers of other fantasy-themed scrolling brawlers- Sega's Golden Axe series, or perhaps more fittingly, Capcom's two arcade Dungeons & Dragons games, Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara. Unsurprisingly, one of Vanillaware's founders, George Kamitani, worked on both of Capcom's D&D games, so it's fitting he's at the helm of this project, in which a band of adventureres must explore tracherous labyrinths and dungeons for the Dragon's Crown, which in the wrong hands could destroy the world. Since this is Vanillaware we're talking about, the game is presented in lavishly detailed 2D, just how we like it!

As for details of how the game plays,  the official website boasts it'll have easy pick-up-and-play controls, online multiplayer for up to four players, and an expansive array of quests and dungeons for players to explore, as well as character stat upgrades and customisations. The trailer and game website highlight six selectable characters (Fighter, Amazon, Wizard, Sorceress, Dwarf and Elf- four of which were also in the Capcom D&D games), but you might also spot what appears to be a non-playable Thief in several screenshots.

Announcement Trailer:

Dragon's Crown is scheduled for a Spring 2012 release (apparently for all regions- Europe rejoice!) only for Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. More game details can be found on the North American Dragon's Crown website.

Wait, what do I put in this box again? Oh, it's about me. I like playing weird and unusual games- the sort you're likely to forget about- and I hope you like reading about them because they're what I write about. And game trivia too. Please look forward to it!

I only have so much space in the opening paragraph, so I decided to mention GrimGrimoire instead, which no-one seems to have heard of. Not even Vanillaware fans.

Also, for those interested, the game now has an official Twitter account (@DragonsCrown) which is posting hi-res artwork and incredible fan art- those fan artists work fast, I tell you what.
