Donkey Kong Country Trilogy To Be Removed From Wii's Virtual Console

Donkey-Kong-Country-Trilogy-To-Be-Removed-From-Wii-Virtual-ConsoleDonkey Kong Country was an amazing platform game that helped define the SNES as the true home of platform gaming.  It boasted some of the best graphics of the entire 16bit era, introduced us to characters still prevalent today, and was successful enough to spawn two great sequels.

This coming Sunday, however - all three of the classic titles are to be removed from the Wii's virtual Console.  If you are a customer in the US then you're out of luck as the titles were already removed earlier in the week.

Nintendo has yet to announce the reasons behind the removals, but the fact that they were developed by the now Microsoft-owned Rare raises suspicions.  The actual notification sent out to EU customers' consoles reads as follows:

Software removals: 25/11/12

Hello,
We would like to let you know that the following titles will become unavailable for purchase on 25/11/12.

  • Donkey Kong Country (Super Nintendo)
  • Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (Super Nintendo)
  • Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (Super Nintendo)

The titles will continue to be available for re-download if you have purchased them before 25/11/12.

So get going! You only have until Sunday!

I would have thought that the fact that Nintendo own the rights to Donkey Kong that this would supercede any rights Rare had to the titles.

Bugger, if I'd've read this sooner I'd've gotten myself Donkey Kong Country 3.

Would there MAYBE be a possibility that they're now headed for XBLA?

I dont understand why they are doing this unless they intend to cycle the games in and out on a limited server. All they will succeed in doing is pushing the retro prices up and piracy levels up too.
