Just days after a HD remake of Final Fantasy VII was promised (once the iconic release is surpassed by a newer title), SquareEnix have made an additional announcement to keep the eager fan boys at bay. The PC port of Final Fantasy VII is due to be rereleased for modern computers with new features in the near future.
Achievements are understandably the first addition to this digital rerelease, something modern gamers will expect. Securing a Gold Chocobo and Knights of the Round Materia are most likely going to be trophy material, but what about the more unusual hidden events such as taking Barret on a date? Whilst these might not add a great deal to the gameplay, it's going to be interesting to see how SquareEnix implements them.
The next new feature is the introduction of handy, although not necessary, cloud (online, not Cloud Strife) based save games.
Alongside these sits a final addition which is either going to go down a treat with retro gamers, or put them off the game entirely. SquareEnix have opted to include functionality on their website which will allow players to 'boost' their characters. According to the official Final Fantasy VII PC website, you can "increase your HP, MP and Gil levels to their maximum, all with the simple click of a button, leaving you to enjoy your adventure". Whether or not this will be a monetised service is yet to be known, but our initial reaction is that clicking this booster button will potentially leave you with an empty adventure and an easy path to those ever so important achievements.
Features aside we've very much looking forward to enjoying Final Fantasy VII once more as we patiently await the HD remake that's long overdue.
