Custom Sega Dreamcast BIOS Replacement In Development

Sega-Dreamcast-Custom-BIOS-ReplacmentFor most of us, the Dreamcast and its built-in firmware gets the job done just fine. That said, those of us in the retro gaming community who love to tinker with old technology will be pleased to know there’s an enhanced BIOS in the works for Sega’s final console - one packed with new features and functionality.

If the terms BIOS and firmware aren’t making much sense to you, don’t worry. These are basically the instructions behind the Dreamcast’s operating system, which not only tell the console what to do when powered on, but it’s also the built in menu that pops up when you don’t have a game inserted. Having seen room for potential, a developer by the name of japanese-cake has begun working on a revised version of these instructions and software to allow the die-hard fans to get more out of the console.

But how exactly can the Dreamcast be improved upon? Well to break it down, here’s some of the new features this BIOS replacement brings:

  • Region free: boot GD/CD from any regions
  • No VGA flag check: no matter if the game supports the VGA output, the lets it boot
  • Bootfile extent check: allow a game to boot even if its bootfile, more commonly called 1ST_READ.BIN, is not located on the outer part of the disc
  • SEGA License screen skip
  • MIL-CD/backup direct boot
  • Black fade-in color while booting from menu
  • No VMU copy-protected file check

While some of these additions may just be cosmetic, the ability to turn your Dreamcast into a region-free console that forces VGA mode on most games will no doubt be a huge draw to some. Additionally the removable of copy-protection on VMU saves will no doubt come in handy too.

Sadly though, this replacement firmware isn’t exactly the easiest to make use of. You’ll not only need to be extremely talented with a soldering iron, but also have access to a chip programmer.

This is great! Just like the AES/MVS modified BIOS. This is so going to get me back into Dreamcast collecting.
