Custom Built ‘Big Steel Battalion Box’ Turns The Mech-Simulator Into An Environmental Experience

Steel-Battalion-Big-Box-InstallationAs Xbox collectors will tell you, Steel Battalion is a rather unique experience for the dated platform worth tracking down. Featuring its very own large sized cockpit controller, the 40 plus buttons, acceleration pedals and two flight stick control method was intended to provide a realistic experience for fans of the mech genre. That said, someone clearly wasn’t impressed by the authenticity on offer from Capcom - so much so they decided to create a walk-in booth with custom environmental stimuli.

Dubbed the B.S.B.B. Mk II (The Big Steel Battalion Box), this artistic installation takes the mech-simulation to a whole new level by shutting the player inside a replica cockpit. Within, not only does the player need to operate the machinery at the tips of their fingers, but they can also seek assistance from their external monitoring station (a helped outside of the booth connected to the player through a headset).

Inside the dark booth the player is presented with a more realistic experience which also enhanced by lighting effects and vibrations sent around the container upon impact in-game. Although a unique and one-of-a-kind creation, artist David Shuff is taking his installation to the North American Bay Area Maker Faire 2015. Simply put it’s something Capcom would be proud of and yet another example of how classic games can be brought back to life.
