Crowdfunding Underway for Smart Phone Retro Game Cartridge: Pico Cassette

PicoCassette2Crowdfunding is underway for Japanese company Beatrobo and the Pico Cassette. The Pico Cassette is a mini Famicom cartridge shaped product that plugs into the audio jack of a smartphone. It will allow them to play retro games using both the Pico Cassette and a special application downloaded to the consumer’s smartphone.

The first game to appear on the Pico Cassette will be Ninja Jajamaru-kun, which was released on the Nintendo Famicom in 1985. The Pico Cassette is meant to bring the classic feeling of buying and playing cartridge based games into the modern era of smart phone gaming.

The company is using Makuake to crowdfund this new product and it appears to be headed to the funder’s addresses by November 2016. Although the Pico Cassette is geared toward the retro gaming market, it will be fascinating to see if this gadget catches on with modern gamers. The question is with instant mobile game downloads will devices like the Pico Cassette have a place in the market? It will be interesting to see how well it does in Japan and also if these games will get a release overseas.

I don't get it... Why do you need this cartridge thing? Smart phones can already play games.

All this adapter does is add a middle man to the game playing process. I get that people want "cartridges" or cassettes to play games but this is just a pure waste of money.
