Crazy Taxi, Shenmue & Other Sega Dreamcast Classics Hacked To Run In Widescreen Mode

Dreamcast-Games-Hacked-To-Run-Widescreen-16-9Although the Sega Dreamcast was ahead of the curve in terms of technology, it never really utilised the widescreen displays that were hitting the shops at the time. A decade and a half later, fans of the console have somehow managed to use an Action Replay CDX / Xploder / Codebreaker cheat disc to make the console output the equivalent of a 16:9 image.

This incredible piece of trickery tinkers with each game’s 3D camera to output an anamorphic widescreen viewport, all whilst keeping the overlaid 2D HUD elements intact. In simpler terms with an example the on-screen clock and other elements in Shenmue remain the exact same size they always has been, all whilst the camera following Ryo around renders more than the eye can usually see. Although this does mean that the on-screen 3D visuals are squished in to fit in the larger viewing angle at the Dreamcast’s usual 4:3 output, when played through a widescreen monitor/TV it is then stretched back out to the correct dimensions at 16:9.

Needless to say the results are nothing short of incredible and something every Dreamcast owner with an Action Replay CDX, Xploder or Codebreaker disc can enjoy. Over at the AssemblerGames forums a group of gamers have begun creating codes for various games to make the most of this camera hack. Many more will no doubt be posted in the near future, so stay tuned.

This is definitely one of the best developments for the Dreamcast in years! :)

Totally agree. I always found it amazing that they got widescreen even in DC emulation but to see it on actual hardware is outstanding.
