After reading about leftover Commander Keen files on a Gamer's Edge Sampler Disk, a member of the Public Commander Keen Forum began digging through the disk image to find a lot more than he hoped for. A fully working Beta version of Commander Keen 1.
Gamer's Edge was a bi-monthly disk sent out by John Romero, who later became a co-founder of id Software.
When creating the Gamer's Edge Sampler Disk featuring Catacombs and Dangerous Dave, a unformatted floppy disk was used as the master disk. What wasn't realised at the time, was that the disk used originally held the Beta version of Commander Keen 1. As the disk hadn't been wiped, the original Commander Keen Beta files still remained on the disk in a dormant state, awaiting to be overwritten by newer files.
Litude of the Public Commander Keen Forum's curiosity sparked upon reading about the left over Commander Keen content and began using disk recovery tools to salvage the files. Sadly there was also Commander Keen 2 data that had mostly overwritten by the new data, but a salvageable version of Commander Keen 1 Beta remained.
Litude has now repackaged up the beta version and created a download link for the rest of the world to enjoy.
