Chinese Nintendo NES Homebrew 'Star Keeper' In Development

Star-Keeper-Nintendo-NES-Homebrew-from-ChinaOver many many years the Chinese output on retro consoles has sadly become known for its dire and bootleg offerings. Having said that, it would appear that there is a retro gaming diamond in this rough - one which has quietly been working on brand new Nintendo NES game for the last two years.

After hiring a translation company to help reveal his latest work, zxdplay of the NintendoAge forums opened a thread which was aptly titled 'New NES game - Star Keeper'. Before discussing his new creation, zxdplay briefly discussed his gaming past and desire to create new experiences for the Nintendo NES, shortly before expressing his frustrations with the bad name other Chinese developers and their 'sham products' have brought to the Far East.

Ranting aside, Star Keeper, is a horizontal scrolling shooter which draws a lot of inspiration from the ZX Spectrum classic Jetpac. Zooming across lush landscapes filled with rather impressive sprite work, Star Keeper has you recovering lost stars around the world with the aim of returning them to your rocket-powered travelling home - whilst dodging incoming enemies and blasting them away.

Looking back at what zxdplay stated regarding other Chinese developments painting the country's gaming output in a bad light, we very much understand his frustrations given the quality of his work. While no release date for a physical cartridge (or ROM file release) has been stated, it's safe to say that the demand is very much there - judging by the thread's replies - and that zxdplay is very much hoping to get his work out there.

While we await further information, a gameplay video of Star Keeper has been uploaded to YouTube.
