Celebrating 16 Years Of DOS Adventure Games From 1982 To 1996

Celebrating-16-Years-Of-Over-400-DOS-Adventure-Games-From-1982-To-1996With limitations on graphical capabilities, earlier games relied heavily on detailed and immersive storylines to engage gamers. This in turn brought around the infamous Point & Click and Text Adventure genres, before eventually paving way to graphic heavy gameplay. To celebrate this pivotal time, we take a look at box art from this memorable era.

Zork, Monkey Island, Discworld and Space Quest to name a few make up the long list of iconic titles which perfectly delivered gameplay via a structured story. As technology pushed forward these games saw the arrival of voice overs for characters, colourful environments and even user interfaces spanning a wide range of in game actions.

While this genre struggles against today's heavy budget releases, who knows where the games industry would be today without this playful genre and incredible storytelling. In an attempt to collect every game falling into this genre which we all love, one YouTube user has gathered box art from 484 different games and placed them into a chronological video presentation.

Out of all these releases, how many do you remember and how many were you lucky to have experienced first hand?

I played a lot of these on my Amiga, those were great times, probably the BEST.

I love this genre - I think my favourite is still the Broken Sword games (not 3).

As a kid, I grew up mapping Beeb text adventures (or trying to anyway) - Sphinx Adventure, Philosopher's Quest and then us beebers were treated to a few basic picces with the text as well with the likes of Eldorado and Twin Kingdom Valley. I rarely actually finished these but at the time, I found them engrossing.
