Capcom’s Super Nintendo Platformer ‘Mega Man X3’ Upgraded With CD-Audio

Mega-Man-X3-MSU-1-Audio-PatchAlthough the Super Nintendo CDRom add-on may have never seen the light of day, it hasn’t stopped homebrew developers from giving us a near identical equivalent. Using the custom built MSU-1 chip, a CD Audio upgrade has been released for Mega Man X3.

Similar to the Legend of Zelda and Mega Man X CD Audio upgrades arriving before it, this patch for Mega Man X3 injects the Super Nintendo ROM with code to read accompanying MP3 files into memory. This is all made possible through the custom Super Nintendo chip MSU-1: a recently developed solution to allow developers access to CD quality audio and Full Motion Video on the Super Nintendo. This added power, however, is only accessible through the SNES emulator higan, or on the original hardware using an sd2snes flash cartridge.

The Mega Man X3 MSU-1 Audio patch takes the CD tracks from the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of the same game, putting them back where they belong alongside the 16-bit action. To get your hands on this more punchy soundtrack, head on over to for a link to download the patch and soundtrack, along with instructions on how to apply it.
