Cancelled Commodore 64 Port of ‘Populous’ Surfaces Online

Populous-Tech-Demo-on-Commodore-64Although making a name for itself on the Amiga, it would appear that Bullfrog and Electronic Arts had plans to bring Populous to the Commodore 64. While the game may have been cancelled by EA Germany, an early prototype and technical demo has since surfaced online for gamers to sample.

Retro gaming preservation site Games That Weren’t recently posted an update regarding this long lost piece of software, after having been sent a disk containing the game’s code on by original programmers Frank Hugenroth and André Hugenroth. The demo features lots of the familiar traits of the Amiga version, however, lacks a lot of the gameplay - as this was very much a demo used to pitch the port to EA Germany.

Yet again we’re given a quick glimpse into what could-have-been in the gaming world years ago. Whether or not the god simulator arriving on the Commodore 64 would have changed anything is anyone’s guess, but those who saw snippets of the game in magazines will finally have their many questions answered.
