Cancelled ‘Beavis & Butt-Head’ Coin-Op Machine Now Playable At Galloping Ghost Arcade

Beavis-Butthead-Arcade-MachineThe much loved duo of Beavis & Butt-Head were set to hit the arcades in their very first coin-op outing in the mid 90s. Having not lived up to expectations in test markets, the game was effectively shelved and the few remaining units lost to time. Despite this, the Galloping Ghost Arcade in Illinois has somehow acquired one of the twelve test cabinets used and demonstrated the game in action.

Originally arriving in a non-working state, upon powering up the cabinet the monitor would display the 3DO logo and nothing more. Looking inside the cabinet and locating the problem, the team at the Galloping Ghost Arcade managed to hook up a Panasonic 3DO to the game’s arcade board and get the game running again. Playing out like the much loved genre of side-scrolling beat-em-ups, the Beavis & Butt-Head coin-op added another dimension into the brawler by allowing you to move forwards and back through the environments. Despite the impressive visuals and technical trickery, the game felt somewhat dated by the time it arrived in 1996.

While the game is yet to be preserved and released online, those interested can check out the cabinet in person at the Galloping Ghost Arcade in North America. Alongside it you’ll also see the unreleased Primal Rage 2 arcade machine too which was restored and made playable in 2014.
