BS-X Project: Super Famicom Satellaview Translated & Nintendo's Download Service To Be Ressurected

BS-X-Project-Super-Famicom-Satellaview-Translated-And-Nintendos-Download-Service-To-Be-RessurectedIn 1995, Nintendo joined forces with a satellite radio company to broadcast Super Famicom experiences over the airwaves. Their short lived service required additional hardware known as the Satellaview, but its functionality has been out of action for many years. Fans, however, have other plans for the defunct service.

Nintendo's partnership with the Japanese satellite TV station WOWOW's satellite radio subsidiary, St.GIGA, granted them access to broadcast games, software, news updates and competitions via radio transmission. One of the more remarkable types of broadcasts that took place was Nintendo's SoundLink games. These fixed time-slot sessions were broadcast in what was soon dubbed the Super Famicom Hour, even bringing voice acting to games like BS The Legend of Zelda.

While the service is long absent from gaming today and superseded by the likes of Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, the hardware once required can still be found on eBay, albeit having little use without St. GIGA's broadcasts. The BS-X Project, however, is aiming to fix this and deliver the once Japanese exclusive entertainment through emulation.

The fan-led project has been hard at work over the last few months, hacking the Satellaview's application cartridge, BS-X : The Story of The Town Whose Name Has Been Stolen. This game-come-menu-system was the gateway to Nintendo's transmissions, allowing users to walk around a digital town and visit various locations with access to the downloadable software.

Although the BS-X Project's aims are somewhat vague, they're offering great promise with their self set challenge of bringing the Satellaview back online with access to all the original features of the BS-X BIOS. While there is much work to be done, feast your eyes on their work so far, the Satellaview's BS-X BIOS translated into English - something you can enjoy for yourself in a Super Nintendo emulator.
