As retro gamers always out on the hunt for more bargains, we’ve all spotted those broken handhelds crying out for a loving owner. Of these, the Nintendo DS has just been given a new lease of life, allowing all those systems with broken hinges to be converted into a classic custom handheld - GBALite.
Given that the earlier models of the Nintendo DS also double up as a Game Boy Advance, retro gamers have begun resculpting these systems into a more permanent backwards compatibility mode. This modification sees the top screen of the handheld completely removed, leaving just the Game Boy Advance side of things behind, with several alterations to smooth out the gaps left behind.
The end result, the GBALite in this instance, is nothing short of fantastic. Reddit user Dem_Pants recently took to the Gameboy subreddit to showcase his creation, detailing the entire process along the way. Aside from a few niggles here and there, the modification looks to be somewhat straight forward - and even do-able on the original phat Nintendo DS too.
