Backlit Game Boy Color Handhelds Hit Chinese Retailer On TaoBao

Backlit-Game-Boy-Color-on-TaoBaoSeveral months ago there was some impressive progress made in Game Boy modification circles after hardware hacker BennVenn managed to get the Game Boy Color running through a Game Boy Advance SP screen. While providing a much crisper image and an illuminated screen, the solution was slightly hindered by the bulky size of the wide LCD screen. Although looking promising, it would appear enthusiasts in China have already provided an impressive alternative with backlit Game Boy Colors readily available on TaoBao.

These modified units are supposedly using brand new backlit TFT displays which match the Game Boy Color’s original screen ratio, albeit through a more defined screen with four pixels available to each one the Game Boy Color originally had. This means that games will not only appear brightly lit from behind, but also at what could be the equivalent of a HD upgrade for the 1998 handheld.

Having said that, this is purely going from the auction’s translated description and photography. While potentially sounding like a fantastic upgrade for the Game Boy Color, we’re yet to confirm in person how well these screens work, and if they suffer from any ghosting or blurring too. Theoretically though they hold a lot of promise and might pave the way for other modders and manufacturers to produce their own take on the upgrade.

Priced up at ¥ 710 (roughly £80), these aren’t the cheapest just yet, however, don’t be surprised if these start popping up on other online retailers in the near future. Those tempted on taking the plunge on this unknown will need to go through the checkout process on TaoBao which is entirely in Chinese.

I bought one like this for the GBA many years ago... it was total crap. Hopefully, this one works much better. The GBA one that I have runs the game considerably slower than the original game.

Was it a modified original GBA or a clone system?

Ah, I didn't realize this was just a new screen in old hardware. This is truly awesome then. The one I was talking about was a really bad clone.
