Atari’s Unreleased Air Race Arcade Game Surfaces On YouTube

Atari-Unreleased-Air-Race-Arcade-Game-Surfaces-On-YouTubeWith countless Atari games arriving in the arcade around the mid-eighties, it’s quite easy to overlook those which never made it into coin-op form. Air Race falls under this unfortunate category, however footage of the inactive futuristic racing game has surfaced on YouTube.

According to YouTube user ScottithGames, in 2007 they were lucky enough to meet up with former Atari graphic artist Alan Murphy. This appointment saw the YouTube user being given an old video tape containing gameplay footage of the unreleased Air Race game, which they’ve kindly uploaded for all to see.

The video’s description states that this very prototype was built using the same hardware and engine as their last three dimensional game- The Last Starfighter (1984). It then goes on to say that had Air Race seen the light of day, it would have been the first racing game to use flat-shaded 3-D polygons. Efforts towards development were far from lost as the technology was later used to create the arcade classics Hard Drivin' and S.T.U.N. Runner in 1989.

Whether or not this game is in Atari’s archives or collectors hands today, only time will tell. A prototype version of the game exists in the MAME library, however it is reported to be incomplete.

Bizarre how this was never released - this would've blown me away in circa 1987 as did STUN Runner and Hard Drivin.

Back then there was nothing else like this and would've blown us away next to the likes of Double Dragon and R-Type.

Don't get me wrong, I love Double Dragon and R-Type, just trying to paint a picture of a comparison for this piece of polygon plushness against the backdop of a sea of sprite based 'conventional' coin ops.
