Whilst Atari may no longer hold the top spot in the gaming industry, their efforts in the 70s and 80s went on to define the our gaming world as we know it. Having formed forty years ago today, Atari went on to revolutionise arcade gaming with their 1972 release Pong, before becoming a household name in 1977 with the 2600.
On 27th June 1972, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney formed Atari. In the last four decades the company has brought us a plethora of gaming equipment, both good and bad, which remains a prominent element of retro gaming today. The Atari 2600 is still their most celebrated console to date with countless collectors still battling over the rarer titles such as Air Raid. On the other hand their less popular releases such as the Atari Lynx and Atari Jaguar still hold a loyal fan base willing to fight off the misunderstanding from the hordes of Sega and Nintendo fans.
If you haven't played Atari today, be sure to boot up your favourite console of choice before the end of the day and pay tribute to the past fourty years.
