Associated Press Released Archived Nintendo Virtual Boy Footage From Shoshinkai 1994

AP-Footage-Of-Virtual-Boy-At-Space-WorldDespite there being no more official releases for our beloved classic consoles, one of the best aspects of being a retro gamer is seeing new discoveries of our gaming past being uncovered. From unreleased video games to fan translation projects, it’s never quiet where retro gaming is concerned. One of the latest findings within the scene comes directly from the multinational news agency Associated Press, a previously thought to be lost video segment on the Nintendo Virtual Boy.

Over the last few weeks AP have been dipping into their archives and digitising old footage from yesteryear’s stories. Amongst these was a short feature on the future of virtual reality gaming during the Nintendo Space World (Shoshinkai) event in 1994. Showcasing the Virtual Boy as it was displayed on the event’s floor back in the day, the footage gives us a brief look at how Nintendo positioned their marketing campaign and reveal to the world two decades ago.

What makes this footage rather significant and worth watching though is its quality. Coming from a time before mobile phone cameras and cheap video recording solutions, it’s difficult finding such clear and detailed videos of our gaming past - especially shots of high profile events such as Nintendo Space World. Within this clip the keen eyed will also note a few unseen shots and prototype hardware being displayed, all of which further adding the big mystery that is the Nintendo Virtual Boy.
