Arcade Urban Legend ‘Polybius’ Set For Documentary Via Kickstarter

The-Polybius-Conspiracy-KickstarterAccording to various sources online, an unusual arcade machine found itself in the depths of a North American town in the 1980s. Unlike other cabinets, Polybius was reported to have given gamers side effects from night terrors to sudden death. As farfetched as this may round, the urban legend lives on and it’s about to see its very own documentary.

Rumoured to be a controversial government program or even an experiment in mind control over the youth of America, as it stands there hasn’t really been any solid evidence to suggest that Polybius ever existed. At the same time, the more you dig into the story behind this legendary arcade cabinet, the more interesting it gets. From internet tales to newspaper clippings, the game which supposedly resembled the arcade hit Tempest may be nothing more than a carefully constructed hoax, but nevertheless it’s another entry into our gaming lore.

The newly launched The Polybius Conspiracy is currently seeking $100,000 via the fundraising platform Kickstarter, all with the of potentially dissecting this long lasting myth. The Kickstarter project’s creator Jon Frechette is set to interview countless developers and designers of the day with the hope that some of them can explain what really happened. While the documentary may not actually uncover anything more than we already know, there’s always the ‘what if’ scenario surrounding what could be the darkest secret in the history of gaming.
