If you found yourself without a gaming console growing up in the early nineties, you could always rely on Apogee to provide equally as exciting releases on the PC. Of all their greats, Wacky Wheels was without a doubt one of their finest releases: a Mode 7 racer which mimicked everything we know and love about Mario Kart.
While Wacky Wheels may be pale in comparison to its inspiration, at the time it was everything home computer gamers had been crying out for. The cartoon visuals combined with its shareware status saw Apogee's Wacky Wheels spread between computers like wildfire upon release in 1994.
Although Wacky Wheels never received the same support as Mario Kart did, twenty years it would appear that the game is now due a reboot. Indie game developers Cascadia Games appear to have secured the rights to Apogee's title and have begun development on an all new version of the game for both iOS and PC. While no release date as been set as of yet, it's expected to be some time around mid-October to mark the game's 20th anniversary.
