Another Unofficial Resident Evil 2 HD Remake In Development With Co-Op Multiplayer

Resident-Evil-2-Remake-Using-Unreal-EngineIt’s safe to say that fans of Resident Evil really want to see the second title in the series remade in HD. Not only has their been community efforts online to get this message across to Capcom, but also a small team of die-hard fans have been recreating the game from scratch using modern tools. This team, however, aren’t the only ones working behind the scenes to see a remake of Raccoon City.

Using the Unreal Engine and various extracted 3D models from Capcom’s Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, Rod Lima has taken to remaking Resident Evil 2 himself as a good excuse to learn various programming techniques. Lima’s unofficial remake of the game has been in the works for around 7 months now, and the end result of what he’s dubbing the final version is nothing short of incredible.

The latest video upload of this remake in action not only shows off some of the later scenes in the game, but also some jaw-dropping co-operative play using the more familiar Resident Evil 4 over-the-shoulder action. Blasting through the preliminary locations of the game, both Chris and Claire can be seen making their way to Raccoon City’s weapon shop in glorious HD.

While it’s unlikely this will ever be released or made playable, we can only hope Capcom is watching. Resident Evil 2 (and 3 for that matter) are long over due a retro remake.

Very cool :D love resident evil 2, and a co-op mod for this is awesome.
Needs more work on the lighting/atmospherics though, it doesn't look quite right as of yet.

Let's see how Capcom reacts to this. Will they be like Square (destroy the project) or like Sega (hire the developer)?

Place your bets!

I went looking for the perceived success of the "Resident Evil" remake on GameCube as evidence for why a "Resident Evil 2" remake must certainly be a success, and found this troubling quote:

"Capcom sold over 1.35 million copies of the game. Nevertheless, Shinji Mikami said that the Resident Evil franchise later shifted away from the survival horror gameplay following the "commercial failure" of this game."

Is it possible, despite the passion those of use who love the franchise have for the prospect of a remake, that it could ultimately be unsuccessful from a business standpoint? If this is why Capcom has chosen thus far to ignore RE2 as a candidate for remake, then it is even more baffling that they have announced a port of the RE remake to PS3 and PS4.

Actually brings up a big question mark when you consider why Capcom would rather produce Duck Tales remastered (an NES game remake) over a RE2 remake.
