Angry Video Game Nerd Celebrates 10 Years Of 'Taking Us Back To The Past' With Desert Bus

AVGN-Desert-Bus-EpisodeWhether you love him or hate him, it's safe to say that the YouTube celebrity The Angry Video Game Nerd very much inspired a generation of video bloggers with his timeless rants, raves and reviews. With a movie in development and countless videos already under his stage name, James Rolfe has decided to celebrate his impressive decade of entertaining us with a nostalgic look at the Sega CD's infamous Desert Bus.

If the name Desert Bus isn't ringing any bells, you're in for a treat. Famous magicians Penn & Teller were working with Absolute Entertainment in the 90s to create an anti-video-game known as Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors. Although it was never released, the idea behind it was that it provided a collection of mini-games you'd put your friends to the test with, only all of them were in some shape or form jokes, pranks or slogs.

One of these in particular, Desert Bus, is a video game recreation of driving a large bus across North America in realtime. As it sounds, the game lasts well over 8 hours - all of which require your full attention. The bus naturally goes off course and inactivity for a set amount of time results in game over. Many gamers have since set themselves the task of beating it, and those who have actually finished the journey are greeted with an anti-climactic increment in their score by one, along with the sight of the bus wanted to be driven again for another single point.

Desert Bus has since gaing cult status for its bizarreness, so much so there is even an Atari 2600 version of the game.

As you'd expect, Rolfe's inspection of Desert Bus is filled countless laughs and throwbacks, along with many curses thrown in Penn & Teller's direction. But what's really worth noting about Rolfe's latest video is that at the end he returns to one of his most memorable haunts, Castlevania II - only to instead tackle a 'fixed' ROM hack of the game. This time round, instead of finding himself fuming once more, the amends made to Simon's Redaction have Rolfe rejoicing that his prior rants had finally been heard, and as a result the show must go on.

Ah man stuck at work tonight. Looking forward to this with breakfast. He was a bit hit and miss in the middle of his long career but I think he's doing a great job currently. Looking forward to the movie too

His videos are great and are hilarious. I bought some of his DVDs and the extras include 'making of', I'm telling you, his video editing skills are 2nd to none. You're right, some of his mid career videos are a bit hit and miss and some of the comedy is forced too much, but his videos of late are back on track to excellence. If you haven't checked it out before I'd recommend his 'Board James' series, they're funnier than the AVGN.
