Android App ‘MSX2Cas’ Brings Tape Loading Via Headphone Jack To The MSX Computers

MSX2Cas-Tape-Image-LoaderIn recent times some retro gamers have converted old iPods into ZX Spectrum tape emulators by converting tape images of games into audio files. By playing the high pitched noise through the headphone jack and back into the micro-computer, the ZX Spectrum is none the wiser that modern technology is feeding it data rather than a traditional cassette tape. While a similar solution has been available for the Commodore 64 too, it’s only as of now that the MSX is enjoying this modern advancement in game loading.

Having recently hit the Google Play Store, MSX2Cas is a simple application that allows you to take .CAS tape images and stream them back to your MSX through audio. Although in principle it’s no different to the ZX Spectrum and Commodore equivalents, the MSX requires a little more know how to get going. Instead of simply typing LOAD like the other home computers, you need to state which program you want to load from the tape beforehand. MSX2Cas very cleverly reads the tape image before playing any audio, and not only showcases the different programs on each tape, but also prompts you on what to type on the MSX to get things running.

The only downside to this fantastic application is that most MSX computers don’t come with a built in tape drive or accompanying one. In order to get the most out of MSX2Cas you’ll either need a tape deck and a Tape to MP3 adapter, or instead you can build a custom DIN8 to headphone jack cable using the instructions on the app’s website.

Whichever method you choose, MSX2Cas is a fantastic addition to video game preservation and a rather handy way of booting the games we know and love with ease.
