Unofficial Port Of Adam Atomic's Canabalt Arrives On Commodore 64

An-Unofficial-Port-Of-Adam-Atomics-Canabalt-Arrives-On-The-Commodore-64If you own an iPhone or have spent any time keeping up to date with the indie gaming scene, you should by now be familiar with Adam Atomic's non-stop running epic known as Canabalt. The 2009 Flash browser-based game has become such a memorable hit, that other coders have ported the game to retro systems such as the Commodore 64.

Just to add to its prominent popularity, this isn't the only version of the game heading to the Commodore 64. Another port of the game titled C64nabalt is underway by Paul 'Paulko64' Koller, who is better known for porting the indie classic VVVVVV to the C64.

Mr SID, the coder behind the C64 version of Canabalt released a playable build of the game earlier this week, which can be run on the original hardware using the right equipment or in an emulator. The game once again shows how much can really be achieved with retro hardware, giving us even more hope for future homebrew releases.

Brilliant!

Given that the key to this game really was it's simplicity and sounds, I wonder how successful this game would've been back in the day. Given that all you needed to do was press the fire button or space bar at the right time, would this game have been panned for being too basic? Or would it have scored big review points for the fast paced action and originality?

Oh, fantastic! Now my dreams of having a portable (non-iProduct) version of Canabalt have become reality! Sort of. I'll be playing this on the PSP's VICE emulator :D
