Aetherbyte Release Christmas Themed PC Engine & TurboGrafx-16 Homebrew Shmup 'Santatlantean'

aetherbyte-release-christmas-themed-pc-engine-a-turbografx-16-homebrew-shmup-santatlanteanJust days after discussing how few festive titles are out there for retro gamers, it would appear that a scrolling shooter starring the much loved Santa has just blasted onto the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16. Built using the same engine as the homebrew hit Atlantean, the pun-errificly titled Santatlantean is now available as a free to download Christmas present for fans of NEC's classic console.

If you're yet to catch up on the news, earlier this year Aetherbyte released a fantastic scrolling shooter for the PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 consoles known as Atlantean. This deep sea shmup was released on a physical HuCard for $60, making it the first ever title to arrive on the medium in over twenty years.

Santatlantean is a festive twist on this homebrew offering, replacing the many different underwater elements with an baubles, presents, gingerbreadmen, Christmas trees and much more. According to Aetherbyte, the story of Santatlantean places us in control of the bearded fellow as he attempts to save Christmas from a wealth of possessed decorations - all of which under a spell by Ms. Claus looking to give her partner some exercise. As far-fetched as it is, Santatlantean provides some fantastic high score action for fans of the genre.

Santatlantean can now be downloaded for free from Aetherbyte's website as a PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 ROM. It can either be played in an emulator, or on the original hardware using a Turbo Everdrive.
